Aberdeen forms a joint taskforce to win association conferences

The city’s main venue, two universities, NHS Grampian and the convention bureau will bid as one team. They credit the same approach with winning EAGE 2026, EUSOBI and the UK Stroke Forum.

Reporting basis

Reporting on P&J Live’s announcement of 15 October 2026, read on 19 October 2026. Attendance and economic-impact figures are as stated in the release and have not been independently verified.

Who is involved

A taskforce to win national and international association conferences for Aberdeen and the north-east of Scotland was launched on 15 October 2026, according to an announcement published by P&J Live. It brings together the team at The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA), the University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University, NHS Grampian and Aberdeen Convention Bureau.

The release names five organisations, though one passage refers to pooling resources across “the four partner organisations”. We have listed the five it names.

The group says it will target associations whose interests match the region’s strengths in energy, life sciences, digital and technology, and food, drink and agriculture.

The wins it builds on

The release presents the taskforce as a formal version of an approach that has already worked:

  • The 87th EAGE Annual Conference and Exhibition, organised by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, came to TECA in June 2026. The release says it brought more than 6,000 participants and 200 exhibitors, was held in Aberdeen for the first time and was won against destinations that have included Vienna, London, Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. It puts the economic impact at an estimated £13.2 million.
  • The European Society of Breast Imaging’s annual scientific meeting, EUSOBI, came in September 2025 with around 1,500 delegates. The bid drew on Aberdeen’s work in medical imaging, including AI breast-screening trials at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
  • The Stroke Association’s UK Stroke Forum held its 20th-anniversary edition at TECA in November 2025, with 2,000 delegates. The bid included a public engagement programme linking stroke survivors and carers to regional support services.

Steve Daun, head of association sales at TECA, said those events “were not won by any single organisation”.

What it means for associations choosing a host

For an association, the useful part of a joined-up bid is what the local partners will actually do. Academic and clinical partners can help with a local organising committee, speakers and links to current research; a convention bureau can coordinate hotels and civic support. The release does not mention financial support for bidding associations, so ask directly whether any is available and on what terms.

Ask, too, how the taskforce will be resourced and who is the single point of contact. A partnership that exists on paper is less useful than named people with time committed to your event.

Wider context

Aberdeen is not alone in presenting bids this way. We look at recent examples from Glasgow, Liverpool and Newport in how UK cities are winning association congresses. The venue is profiled at P&J Live.
