Four recent wins, one pattern
Read the announcements behind recent congress wins in the UK and the venue is rarely the only actor named.
- Glasgow. The SEC will host the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2030, the first time the congress has come to the city. The SEC says the bid was supported by academics from the University of Glasgow and built around the message “People Make Mathematics”. The IMU General Assembly will meet in Dublin the same year.
- Liverpool. UKREiiF, the real estate and infrastructure forum, will move to Liverpool Experience Campus from 2028. The bid was developed by the venue with the city region’s Combined Authority, the city council and Liverpool BID Company.
- Aberdeen. On 15 October 2026 the city’s main venue, two universities, NHS Grampian and the convention bureau formed a taskforce to bid together, crediting the same approach with winning EAGE 2026, EUSOBI 2025 and the UK Stroke Forum.
- Newport. ICC Wales hosted the Worldchefs Congress and Expo in May 2026, which it says was held in the UK for the first time in 98 years. The venue describes years of work and lobbying alongside the Culinary Association of Wales, the Celtic Manor Resort and the Welsh Government.
The common thread is a host team: an academic, professional or civic partner that gives the association a reason to come, alongside a venue and a bureau that make it workable.
Why the local partner matters
Association congresses belong to professional and academic communities. A local partner from that community can lend credibility to the bid, help form a local organising committee and connect the programme to current work in the host city. Aberdeen’s EUSOBI bid drew on medical-imaging research at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary; Glasgow’s mathematics bid was led by the university’s own mathematicians. A venue cannot supply that on its own.
Civic partners bring something different: hotels, transport and the promise of a city that will notice the event. Liverpool’s mayor framed UKREiiF’s move in exactly those terms, saying the aim is for the event to “become part of Liverpool”.
What associations should ask a bidding city
- Who is on the host team, and what have they committed? Ask for named people and the time their institutions will give, not just logos on a bid document.
- What, if anything, is financially supported? None of the four announcements discusses subvention or other financial support. Ask directly, and get any offer in writing with its conditions.
- What legacy activity is proposed, and who pays for it? Aberdeen’s UK Stroke Forum bid included public engagement for stroke survivors and carers. Make sure any such programme has an owner and a budget.
- Can delegates get there? Glasgow’s case leans on new air routes. Test them against your members’ origins and dates, as we set out in our piece on Glasgow’s air links.
- Is there enough accommodation at the right price? Venues publish hotel figures on different bases. The QEII Centre cites more than 26,000 bedrooms within walking distance; Manchester Central cites more than 2,500 within a five-minute walk. Neither tells you what is available on your dates.
Read the success figures carefully
Bid announcements tend to carry records. The SEC says the European Renal Association Congress set an attendance record of 10,680 registrations in 2026; Aberdeen’s release puts EAGE’s economic impact at £13.2 million. Registrations are not the same as people on site each day, and economic-impact estimates rarely come with their method. Our guide to measuring beyond attendance explains how to keep those figures in their place.
The takeaway
For an association, the strongest bid is not necessarily the biggest building. It is the city where named local partners will do real work for the congress, where members can travel affordably, and where the commitments are written down. The venues mentioned here are profiled in our directory: SEC, Liverpool Experience Campus, P&J Live and ICC Wales.
