Reporting basis

Reporting on Bradford Council's announcement as reported by Insider Media on 21 October 2026, read on 22 October 2026, with Placemaking Europe's own published call for cities and event format. Dates, delegate figures and the quote are as reported; we have not independently confirmed them.

What was announced

Bradford has been chosen to host Placemaking Week Europe 2027, which will run from 28 September to 1 October 2027. It is the first time a UK city has been selected for the event, according to Insider Media’s report of 21 October 2026 on the announcement, which Bradford Council made at its Scale Up conference for businesses.

Placemaking Week Europe is an annual gathering of urban leaders, planners, designers, academics, businesses and community organisations. The report says it attracts more than 600 delegates from dozens of countries each year. Earlier editions have been held in cities including Strasbourg, Rotterdam, Pontevedra, Reggio Emilia and Wrocław, which hosted the 2026 edition.

The report says Bradford won the event through a competitive selection process, building on its year as UK City of Culture 2025. As host, the city will help shape the conference themes, and delegates will visit regeneration projects across the district. Cllr Andrew Judson, the council’s executive member for regeneration, economy and planning, is reported as saying that attracting major conferences, events and business visitors “is becoming an increasingly important part of Bradford’s growth strategy”.

Placemaking Europe’s own website is consistent with the 2027 edition being allocated: its current call for cities seeks hosts for the 2028 and 2029 editions, with letters of interest due by 30 March 2027.

A format built around the city, not one venue

Placemaking Europe describes the week as a 3.5-day festival of keynotes, plenaries, on-site and off-site workshops and site visits. It says it prefers an experiential event with a creative home base and unique locations around the host city.

That shapes what a host has to offer. Events Review’s reading, not a statement from the organisers, is that this kind of association event is won on subject matter and local partners rather than on the size of a convention centre. Bradford’s case rested on its regeneration programme and its City of Culture year, which are exactly what the delegates come to see.

What it means for organisers

For associations weighing a UK host city, the useful question is what the destination itself adds to the programme: which projects delegates could visit, and which local organisations would take part. For other organisers, the week of 28 September 2027 will bring several hundred international visitors to Bradford, so anyone planning an event there that week should check venue and hotel availability early.
