You can run a conference, an exhibition and a waterside dinner on one site at what the NOC calls the UK’s national home of marine science, with a 132-seat raked lecture theatre, a seminar room for 140, a marquee for up to 800 standing and a café overlooking Empress Dock. A Unilink bus stops outside the main entrance, so delegates arriving at Southampton Central station or the airport can reach you without a shuttle. NOC Events is the hire arm of the National Oceanography Centre, a charity whose Southampton building sits on European Way within Southampton Docks.
Event spaces and capacities
The NOC says it has up to 25 bookable meeting spaces, from small boardrooms to lecture theatres, and that every room has natural daylight and access to a data projector and screen. It publishes figures for six spaces. The largest indoor room is the Seminar Room, at 140 theatre style. For bigger events the NOC Marquee, a modular structure 45m by 15m that can be lengthened in 5m sections, takes 300 seated with rear projection, 400 for a banquet and 600 to 800 for a standing reception, with room for 30 table-top exhibits that double as a catering area. The fourth-floor conference suite, served by a lift to all floors, has its own reception area for registration, next to the lecture theatre and an exhibition and breakout space used for stands, poster boards, catering and one-to-one meeting tables. The NOC does not publish floor areas for its indoor rooms.

The marquee area is worked out from its published 45m by 15m footprint. The marquee also seats 350 for dinner with a stage or dance floor. The café seats 150 on long tables. The lecture theatre has 132 fixed raked seats plus three wheelchair spaces, a limit of 135 the NOC says must never be exceeded. The Beverton and Swallow rooms each take up to 12 in lounge seating with video conferencing. Capacities as published by the venue on its conference facilities page, checked 8 November 2026.
Getting there and parking
You can bring delegates in by public transport without a car park plan. Southampton Central is the nearest station, about 90 minutes from London Waterloo, and Unilink buses U1A, U1C and U1E link the centre with the station, the city centre and Southampton Airport, stopping directly outside the main entrance. On foot the building is about five minutes from Dock Gate 4 and Dock Gate 5 along lit walkways, and Red Funnel ferries from Cowes arrive at Town Quay, about a 15-minute walk away. Cyclists get covered bike parking, showers and changing rooms. On-site parking is limited, and the NOC points drivers to a multi-storey car park a short walk away. Because the site is inside the port run by Associated British Ports, your delegates may be stopped by ABP security and asked for ID.
Catering, AV and accommodation
You deal with one caterer for the whole site: the University of Southampton Hospitality team supplies all food and drink on the NOC estate, from canapé receptions to formal dinners in the café. In the Charnock theatre the room hire includes a built-in projector, a 16ft by 9ft screen, a lectern with gooseneck microphone and prompter screen, two lapel microphones and dimmable lighting, all run by NOC staff. Roving and panel microphones and stage lighting cost extra. The Seminar Room has built-in projection on three units along one wall and a PA system. The marquee is hired as an empty shell, and the NOC names Buchannan Events for carpets, linings, furniture and glazed window panels and Moxhams Ltd for lighting, staging and AV. The NOC security team covers events, with extra charges for some event types. There are no bedrooms on site, but the NOC lists hotels from 0.6 miles away and says it has negotiated rates with some of them for delegates.
What to ask before you book
- Which of the 25 meeting spaces are free on your dates, and what are their capacities, given the NOC only publishes figures for six?
- Does the NOC’s own calendar clash with yours? It hosts its own events, including Ocean Business from 6 to 8 April 2027.
- Where on the estate can the marquee go, does a dockside position with glass window panels cost more, and what does an extension in 5m sections add?
- Can disabled delegates park on site, and does the chair lift to the Charnock stage suit your speakers?
- How should delegates bring ID for ABP security at the dock gates, and will the NOC brief the gate in advance?
- Which hotels have negotiated rates, and is the quote for room hire and University of Southampton catering one combined package?
