You can run a daytime conference in a 90-seat lecture theatre with its own registration foyer, then move your guests into the galleries after closing for a seated dinner under a sperm whale skeleton or drinks beside a Tyrannosaurus rex, without changing venue. On Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public, you can hire the whole building for a Corporate Takeover Day of 8 to 12 hours for up to 1,000 guests. Manchester Museum is part of the University of Manchester and occupies an Alfred Waterhouse building on Oxford Road that opened to the public in 1888. It reopened in February 2023 after a redevelopment, and says it was named European Museum of the Year 2025.
Event spaces and capacities
You get five named spaces that suit different parts of one event programme: a lecture theatre and a hybrid boardroom for the working day, and three halls and galleries for receptions and dinners. The largest single-room figure the museum publishes is 200 for a drinks reception in the Main Hall, and the largest seated dinner is 120 in Living Worlds. For bigger groups the Corporate Takeover Day opens the whole museum for up to 1,000 guests. The museum does not publish floor areas or a separate exhibition hall for hire.

n/p means the museum does not publish a figure for that layout. The Conference Room is set boardroom style for 18. The Living Worlds theatre figure and the Fossils and Dinosaurs dinner figure appear in the 2026 hire brochure; the Fossils and Dinosaurs web page also gives 85 for a wedding ceremony. Capacities as published by the venue on its spaces pages and in its Venue Hire Brochure 2026, checked 5 November 2026.
The Main Hall is a refurbished ground-floor room with a built-in PA, projector, adjustable lighting and a portable bar, and the furniture can be cleared or left in place. Next to it are the Picnic Area, which the museum says can become a green room, the café, all-gender and accessible toilets and the loading bay used for equipment. Living Worlds is on the first floor directly above Fossils and Dinosaurs, so the two are often booked together: drinks with Stan the Tyrannosaurus rex downstairs, then dinner under fairy lights upstairs. Fossils and Dinosaurs has its own entrance on Coupland Street overlooking the university’s Old Quad, with toilets in the basement and step-free access.
Getting there and parking
Your delegates can arrive by rail, tram, bus or bike without needing a car. The museum gives walking times of about 14 minutes from Manchester Oxford Road station, 17 minutes from St Peter’s Square Metrolink stop and 21 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly. Frequent buses, including the 42, 43, 142, 143 and V1, stop on Oxford Road, and the building is on the Oxford Road Cycleway. For drivers, the nearest public car park is University of Manchester Car Park D on Booth Street West (M15 6FH, entry from Higher Cambridge Street), about two minutes’ walk away, with Blue Badge bays on its ground floor; the Aquatics Centre car park is the other close option. Coaches can use a bay outside the museum on Oxford Road. Oxford Road has bus gates open only to buses, black cabs and cycles from 6am to 9pm daily, so brief drivers and taxi firms to avoid a penalty charge. The museum does not publish parking charges or EV charging.
Catering, AV and accommodation
You do not need to bring in a production company for a standard conference. The Kanaris Lecture Theatre has a 5m wide high-definition projection screen with surround sound and a lectern with a PC, a Mac mini, a microphone and a laptop input, and the Kanaris Foyer next door is used for registration, buffets and drinks. The Main Hall has a 4m screen, ClickShare, four handheld wireless microphones and a lavalier, plus a digital mixing desk for bands or DJs. The Conference Room is built for hybrid meetings, with an 86 inch screen, cameras, table microphone pods and Zoom and Teams installed.
Catering comes from Hospitality on Campus, the University of Manchester’s own catering team, which writes the corporate menu. Gallery trails and quizzes are free with any booking, and add-ons include curator talks, behind-the-scenes tours and craft workshops. There are no bedrooms on site. For access, the museum describes a ramped main entrance from Oxford Road, lifts to every floor, level access to all public spaces, four accessible toilets, a Changing Places toilet, a hearing loop at reception, a quiet room and a prayer room with ablution facilities. It also says it was the world’s first Carbon Literate museum.
What to ask before you book
- The Main Hall seats 90 for both theatre and dinner. If you need a 90-seat plenary and a 90-cover lunch on the same day, ask whether the turnaround happens in the Main Hall or whether lunch moves to the Kanaris Foyer.
- Gallery dinners take place after public closing. Ask for the earliest access time for setting up Living Worlds, given the museum is open until 5pm on most days and until 9pm on Wednesdays.
- The museum says The Vivarium and Nature’s Library are closed until May 2027. Check whether the work affects lift routes, noise or views from Living Worlds on your date.
- Takeover Days run on Mondays only and are capped at 1,000 guests. Ask how that number is split across the building, as the largest published single-room figure is 200.
- Ask which loading bay hours and vehicle sizes apply to your suppliers, and how they should approach given the Oxford Road bus gates.
- Ask whether any Hospitality on Campus menus are restricted in the galleries, where the museum guards its collections against pests.
