You can seat up to 1,200 guests for dinner under the glass roof of the Grand Gallery, or take a group of 50 to a private boardroom looking across the Old Town to Edinburgh Castle, all in one building on Chambers Street. The museum says its galleries can be worked into your event through guided tours, exclusive access or a private view, so the collections give your guests something to do between courses or sessions. The National Museum of Scotland is run by National Museums Scotland, and venue hire is handled by its subsidiary NMS Enterprises Ltd with an onsite events team.
Event spaces and capacities
The museum publishes eight hire options, from the Grand Gallery (1,500 for a reception) and the 210-seat Auditorium down to the Board and Bute Rooms for 50. It does not publish floor areas or a dedicated exhibition hall; for an exhibition alongside a conference, the Auditorium hire includes the South Hall Gallery and Events Space, which the museum offers for exhibitions, breakouts and catering. Figures are given per event type rather than per layout, so the table maps dinners to banquet and drinks to reception; n/p means not published.

Capacities as published by the venue. Source: nms.ac.uk (grand gallery and entrance hall, rooftops, board and bute rooms, auditorium complex, scotland galleries, other galleries).
Capacities as published by the venue on its spaces page and the individual space pages, checked 5 November 2026. The Grand Gallery also takes dinner dances for up to 700, Rooftops and the Board and Bute Rooms take meetings of up to 50, and the 800 reception figure covers Hawthornden Court with the Kingdom of the Scots and Early People galleries together.
Rooftops sits on Level 5 with floor to ceiling windows facing the castle and opens onto a private roof terrace. The Board and Bute Rooms stack over three levels: the circular Bute Room, the Boardroom above it with a burr maple table, and a roof terrace on top. The Entrance Hall, with stone arches under the Grand Gallery, is offered for 700 at pre-dinner drinks.
Getting there and parking
Your delegates can arrive by train without needing a taxi: the museum puts Edinburgh Waverley 10 to 15 minutes away on foot, and the Princes Street tram stop about the same distance up The Mound. Buses stop on Chambers Street, George IV Bridge and South Bridge, and there are cycle racks on Chambers Street. The museum has no car park of its own; it points drivers to nearby NCP sites and limited Zone 3 pay and display bays, and advises public transport because parking is busy. Four disabled bays on Chambers Street are free but cannot be booked. Coaches can drop off outside the Main Entrance and park at Johnston Terrace. For events outside opening hours (the museum is open to visitors daily from 10:00 to 17:00), guests use the back entrance on Lothian Street.
Catering, AV and accommodation
You choose from a short approved list rather than briefing an unknown supplier. The museum says that because of its buildings and collections only approved catering, floristry and production suppliers may work there. Its caterers are Events by Benugo Scotland, Heritage Portfolio and Wilde Thyme, and its event producers are Core Event Services, JMP Productions, Cameron Events and Vision Events, with approved florists, entertainers, prop hire and a photographer. The museum says your event manager will put together a proposal with estimated costs. The Auditorium has its own audio visual equipment and an induction loop, and free WiFi runs throughout the building. Profits from events are gift aided to National Museums Scotland, and all venue hire proceeds fund its work.
For accessibility, the museum lists automatic doors at every entrance, level access through the Tower Entrance, lifts to all floors, accessible toilets on every floor, a Changing Places toilet on Level 0 and free wheelchair loans. Its full access guide is on AccessAble.
What to ask before you book
- The Grand Gallery is published at 1,200 for dinner but 700 for a dinner dance. Ask how much floor the dance area and stage take and what that leaves for your table plan.
- The museum is open to the public until 17:00. Ask the earliest time you can start setting up in the Grand Gallery or Hawthornden Court and the latest finish for an evening event.
- Only approved suppliers may work in the building. If you have an AV or production company you already use, ask whether it can work alongside one of the four approved event producers.
- The Auditorium page gives 210 seats while the venue overview says 200. Confirm the bookable seat count and what equipment is included with the South Hall Gallery and Events Space.
- Rooftops and the Board and Bute Rooms both have roof terraces. Ask what the indoor fallback is if the weather rules out the terrace for your reception.
- Out-of-hours guests come in through Lothian Street. Ask whether that entrance has level access and where coaches and accessible drop-off should stop in the evening.
